DC5 - Rochester NY Fans

Through the "Magic of the Internet", I've been pleased to meet up with some other life-long DC5 fans from my Rochester NY USA area. I refer to Carl and Debbie Olds, and to Bill and Debbie Topor. Bill is a fine musician, and these days he's launching his new band, "The Bill Topor Five" (I wonder where they got a name like that?) He's been good enough to fill in on drums for my own band (creatively named "The Boltons") on two occasions when our own drummer wasn't available. Bill and Debbie have been active in Christian youth work for years, most notably with an organization called "Young Life". Meanwhile, Carl and his wife Debbie are also former youth group leaders. These days, Carl has a ministry to Viet Nam War vets (www.americanreg.com), while Debbie works with young children. (Pictured below: Bill Topor, Rob Bolton, Carl Olds)

In December of 2002, we held our first annual "Western NY DC5 Convention" at my home. My wife prepared lots of delicious food, and the six of us rallyed in the family room to four hours of DC5 music and some great fellowship. The evening opened with the song "Just a Little Bit Now", and then touched on everyones favorites from every album. Stimulating discussion included total agreement on the merits of "Look Before You Leap" as an appropriate A-side single, along with unanimous denunciation of "Satisfied With You" as a commercial flop. Our most heated disagreement of the night stemmed from my insistence that "No Time to Lose" was based on "Twist And Shout" and that "It'll Only Hurt for a Little While" was based on The Who's "My Generation". I felt I demonstrated my evidence quite well, but I couldn't quite wrangle a full submission from anyone else. Meanwhile, the women chose "Your Turn to Cry" and "Because" as their favorite songs. We shared DC5-related memories, and of course that led to other revealing tales of our various journeys through life. It turns out that we all share a strong faith in Christ, and a desire to love others through His spirit. We don't imagine that to be a DC5-induced trait, but it does make the times we spend together special.
